The
school at all times has the absolute discretion to
determine the proper placement for new students. Testing
and other appropriate means are used to ensure that
students are placed properly.
Students are usually placed in the grade, which follows
next in sequence from their previous schooling. However,
students enter ISK from many different countries with
widely differing educational systems. Students who enter
from schools with a basically American curriculum are
placed with their age group, provided they have
successfully completed the appropriate number of years
in school. The American pattern of education usually
calls for one year of Kindergarten (at age 5) and a
total of 12 years of elementary (grades 1-5) and
secondary (grades 6-12) education, covering the ages of
5-17 or over. University entrance is normally at age 18.
While these ages are not rigid standards, ISK uses them
as general guides in grade placement. Students who enter
from American Curriculum schools or from other national
schools with the same calendar will be placed on the
basis of past school records, number of years in school,
age, and other factors deemed relevant by the
administration and the professional staff.
Placement of students with limited ability in English
will be in accordance with the Board’s policy concerning
English-as-a- Secondary Language programs.
Special Needs Students:
Due to the size of the school it
will be difficult to place students in ISK who have
special needs. However, students with special needs may
be placed on the basis of past records, past placement,
current assessment and the Director’s of Studies
recommendation.
From US Systems:
Students coming from other American based programs will
generally be placed according to their previous school’s
recommendation.
From Other National Systems:
Where national education programs in other countries closely
correspond to the American grade level system, the main
criteria for student placement will be according to the ISK cut-off age and number of years of school completed
unless academic history and/or testing indicates a
different placement. Any concern regarding placement
will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
High School Students:
High School grade classification for students not requiring
ESL services will be based on the number of years
completed, number of credits earned and time of year of
arrival. |
